Choosing a Domain Name

When you think of a domain name, or a website name, you think of Google or YouTube or Facebook or Amazon. These names actually all have things in common and it’s why their domain names are so easy to remember. Choosing the right domain name can be tricky and is such a critical part to the success of your business or idea.

There’s so many factors to consider when selecting the right domain name and then at the end of it all the domain name may not even be available. It can be tricky unless you know how to select the ideal name for your project or business. Let’s go over some tips.

Tips on Selecting a Domain Name

1) Try to choose a domain that matches your company name exactly or one that’s close enough. Usually specific names are taken so you have to add in an additional word to create the domain name. For example, if you want the domain name “Giant Tigers” but it’s taken try adding an additional descriptive word like “Giant Red Tigers”.

2) Keep it short. People don’t remember crazy domain names with lots of letters and numbers. Short and simple is always the way to go when choosing domain names unless there is a specific purpose in terms of marketing efforts.

3) Take the opinion of those around you, other business owners and your target audience prior to selecting the name. Maybe run a survey to get everyone’s opinion. For personal projects it might not matter but for public projects it’s important to select a domain name which many people find appealing.

4) Remember, when you select a domain name, it’s set in stone! Yes, you can go ahead and buy another one but that one is up on the web for good. Take your time and don’t rush into a name you regret later.
